Dinosaur Projects

Oh my goodness did we have a great time learning about dinosaurs!

My students spent a good chunk of Reader's Workshop reading about all kinds of dinosaurs and then privately chose their favorites. Amazingly, they all chose the same four -- T-Rex, Brachiosaurus, Iguanadon and Triceratops. I was secretly rooting for Pterodactyl!

Once chosen, during Writer's Workshop they worked in groups to research their dinosaur and then wrote individual reports. These reports were AMAZING!

My students included a double bubble Thinking Map to compare their dinosaur to another kind and also created fantastic skeletal diagrams with labels.

Aye, aye, aye - they even created a glossary, table of contents and an index! They really got into this project so we extended it.

My students made little dioramas reflecting habitat out of cardstock. Then we painted coffee filters in sort of an Eric Carle sorta way. Once dry, the students drew their dinosaur onto the coffee filter, cut it out and placed it in its habitat.

Viola!
